ANGSA
For over 50 years, special Apollo samples have remained sealed and preserved under pristine conditions, awaiting the advancements of modern science. These include core samples sealed on the lunar surface, frozen samples, and those stored in helium—among them, the Apollo 17 Double Drive Tube 73001/73002 and Apollo 17 basalt 71036 (frozen sample).
The Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis (ANGSA) initiative is now unlocking these untouched lunar materials, leveraging state-of-the-art instrumentation and multiple analytical techniques to reveal new insights that were beyond reach during the Apollo era.
With a team of over 50 scientists and engineers across nine research groups, ANGSA is, in many ways, a cost-effective lunar sample return mission—one that offers fresh perspectives on lunar volatile reservoirs and the geological processes that shaped the Moon. The discoveries made through this initiative will also serve as a critical reference point for Artemis and future lunar exploration.
The datasets listed below contain laboratory-analysis data of ANGSA samples archived in the Astromaterials Data Archive. These datasets, from PI-led teams and their sub-teams, are part of the "Preservation of Data Produced by the Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis (ANGSA) Program" project, supported by NASA through PDART. Key project goals include archiving program sample data in a centralized location to improve discoverability throughout the community.
